Week of November 28th Happenings

We hope you had a restful and enjoyable Thanksgiving holiday.  We can't recall better weather for the weekend.  It seems like we are often planning our travels around threatening blizzards!  It will be back work on Monday and we have a few CDE teams that are going to practice this week:

Tuesday Morning: Small Animals at 7:15am
Thursday Morning: Floriculture at 7:15am

The next big FFA event is on December 12th - Fruit Delivery!  Then it is the U of MN invitational contests on December 15th.  We are sending two small animals teams and at least one floriculture team.  We also have room for a farm management team and a nursery/landscape team.  There are also leadership contests that day and we are looking for a prepared public speaker, an extemporaneous speaker, and a job interview contestant.

We have also started a GroupMe FFA list.  If you are interested in receiving text messages of upcoming FFA events and activities, please send an email with your cell phone number to c_ovrebo@medford.k12.mn.us and I will get you included on our list.  Standard text messaging rates apply.

Keep working on those proficiencies and degrees.  Mr. Larson and I are happy to schedule computer time to help anyone on their applications.

2012 Scholarships and Awards

2011 is coming to a close and that means that FFA awards season is upon us.  The two awards that members should currently be working on are their Proficiencies and Scholarships.  Proficiencies are awards that are related to their SAE project areas.  Members should use their record books to complete the applications.  This year's applications have gone live and are very similar to last year's.  This means you can easily copy and paste the info from last year's app into this year's app or in some cases just update last year's app.  If you can't find your app from last year, talk to Mr. Ovrebo or Mr. Larson and we will see what we have in our files.  The apps can be found in a number of places:

#1: Find the apps on the National FFA Website.
#2: The apps can be found in the "FFA" folder under "Member Apps" on the student server at school.
#3: The documents can be found in the "FFA Docs" tab on Mr. Ovrebo's school website.

All of the proficiency apps are excel documents and the handbooks are pdf's.  They are not the easiest thing to complete so be sure the ask many questions and use Mr. Larson and Mr. Ovrebo as resources.

The 2012 National FFA Scholarship Application has gone live and can be found at the National FFA Scholarship.  Be sure to start filling it out ASAP.  The app is for graduating seniors and college freshman.

Join "Duckwatch 2011" with the Introduction to Veterinary Science class by clicking on the "Videos" tab on Mr. Ovrebo's high school website.

Ag Department Activities Week of November 21st

Well, we have a short week at school before we can celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday.  A very busy early November is going to yield to a few weeks of less excitement as winter sports begin to ramp up.  We have the U of MN invitational coming in early December so this week's activities focus on preparing our teams for that.

Monday: FFA meeting in the Ag Classroom at 7:15am
Tuesday: Small Animals Practice in the Ag Classroom at 7:15am
Wednesday: Floriculture Practice in the Ag Classroom at 7:15am

We will be discussing fruit delivery, the U of MN invitational, proficiency and state degrees, and holiday programs at our meeting.

Spotlight on the classroom:
Mr. Ovrebo's Intro to Vet Science will bring their embryo study to an exciting close this week.  Hopefully they will be seeing their duckings hatch before the Thanksgiving break.  Check out the "Videos" tab on Mr. Ovrebo's High School web page to join in "Duck Watch 2011".  We hope to have live streaming video of the incubators as the ducklings hatch.  The Vet science is also going to welcome Dr. Wildegrubbe from the Faribault Veterinary Clinic to share her experiences in vet school.

Please contact us for more information or to answer any questions that you might have.
